FAO Donates Gadgets To MOA

To support the government establish the national task force, conduct a rapid assessment and quickly put in place a surveillance system and a rapid development mechanism to assist farmers avert the threat posed by the Fall Army Worm (FAW), (scientifically: Spodoptera frugiperda), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has made a donation of assorted gadgets to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The donation include 100 pieces of Pheromone Traps; 600 pieces of Lures; 12 liters of Deltamethrin; 1 piece of cotton wool; 25 pieces of Smart Phones (Tecno) and 25 pieces of SIM cards was received by Assistant Minister Ernest J. Clarke on behalf of the Ministry.

The devastating Army Worm has the potential to cause serious damage to crops, yield losses and threaten national household food and nutrition security. 

Making the donation on Wednesday May 8, 2019, Madam Mariatou Njie, FAO-Liberia Country Rep said previous records showed  the pest feed on leaves, and stems of more than 80 plant species causing major damage to economically important cultivated grass species such as maize, rice, and vegetable crops.  Madam Njie also cautioned that the recipients should make good use of the donation.

Receiving the items the Assistant Minister for Administration Ernest J. Clarke, said FAO has been working mutually with the Ministry of Agriculture to achieve the goal of the President of Liberia in promoting food security and nutrition in the sector.
