Ministry of Agriculture Enhances Animal Health Services with Donation of 30 Motorbikes from USAID and FAO

[Monrovia, Liberia, October 3, 2024] – In a big way to strengthen veterinary services across Liberia, the Ministry of Agriculture has received 30 YAMAHA motorbikes to support its Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), thanks to a generous donation from USAID, facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This contribution is set to transform the delivery of animal health services, particularly for livestock farmers in rural areas, by making veterinary care more accessible and efficient.
During the official handover ceremony, USAID Mission Director James Wright underscored the significance of the donation as part of the "One Health" approach, which aims to enhance animal health and promote sustainable agricultural practices. "In Liberia, community animal health workers are essential in delivering vital services to both animals and agricultural communities," Director Wright stated. “These motorcycles will greatly enhance access to remote areas, enabling timely reporting and response to animal disease outbreaks.”
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. P. Fulton Blasin, Assistant Minister for Administration, expressed heartfelt gratitude to USAID and FAO for their ongoing support. He emphasized the critical role this contribution will play in improving the nation’s animal health sector. "These motorbikes are more than just vehicles; they are vital tools that will connect our livestock farmers to essential veterinary services," Min. Blasin remarked. "This support reflects a commitment to combating zoonotic diseases and enhancing the health of animals that are crucial to many families' livelihoods."
Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) serve as the first line of defense for livestock health but often struggle to cover extensive distances due to transportation challenges. The new motorbikes will empower CAHWs to reach more farmers swiftly, providing crucial care and responding effectively to emergencies.
Minister Blasin also acknowledged the dedication of CAHWs, who often work under challenging conditions. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working hand in hand with development partners to safeguard animal and public health, emphasizing that this collaboration is key to preventing zoonotic disease outbreaks and ensuring a healthier future for Liberia.
The delivery of these motorbikes marks a significant advancement in the Ministry of Agriculture’s ongoing efforts to enhance veterinary services, ultimately supporting the health of the country’s animals and the livelihoods of its people
