(Bong & Nimba Counties, March 11, 2021): A high-level Ministry of Agriculture team last weekend assessed lowland (swamp) rice farming in six districts in central and northern Liberia – the region noted for high yielding rice production.
Agriculture Minister Jeanine Milly Cooper headed the MOA mixed team of technicians and policy makers to assess Bong Mines, Bellemu, Palaquelleh & Garmue and Kpatawee in Bong County and Gbendin in Nimba County.

Minister Cooper was impressed with farmers’ resilience in lowland rice farming while the farmers were excited interacting with the MOA team.
“The assessment has given the MOA what farmers need to help increase not only rice, but other food crops production”, the Minister said.
Lowland rice production is prevalent in these two counties and Lofa also.
The United Nations Food Agriculture Organization estimates that “lowland farms have the potential to yield up to 80-90 percent more rice than upland ones [dry land]
