MOA Distributes Eight Thousand Oil Palm Seedlings in Five(5) Countries
(Monrovia, Sunday, July 3, 2022):- The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has distributed 8, 610 high grade oil palm seedlings – from January to June 2022 – in 15 administrative districts within Bomi, Bong, Margbi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount Counties.
The seedlings – from the Tenera variety – were procured through the MOA’s executed Smallholder Agriculture Transformation and Agribusiness Revitalization Project (STAR-P) with funding from the World Bank.
They are disease-resistant with significant high yield that fruit from 4-5 years after transplanting which seeks to increase the income of smallholder farmers.
“One of the Government of Liberia’s priorities, with direction from His Excellency President George Weah, is to empower our farmers and this has been the preoccupation of the MOA”, Agriculture Minister Jeanine Cooper said.
Oil palm – Liberia’s staple fat, rice and vegetable are the value chains development which the MOA’s STAR Project focuses.
Farmers in Kpaii, Panta Salala, Suakoko Districts in Bong County received the highest with 3060 seedlings followed by Districts 1, 3 & 5 in Margibi County with an accumulated 1,350 seedlings.
Klay, Senjeh and Suehn-Mecca Districts – noted for oil palm growing in Bomi– were provided 2,100 seedlings next recipients were oil palm farmers in Bopolu and Gbarma Districts in Gbarpolu County collected 1,200 seedlings.
Grand Cape Mount’s Districts of Tewor and Garwula received 900 seedlings.
More seedlings will be distributed to farmers in the coming months
