New Modern Markets to Open in Nimba, Offering Better Trading Spaces for Farmers and Market Women
[Nimba County, January 12, 2026] The Ministry of Agriculture, through its Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP), has completed the construction of five modern market buildings in Saclepea, Flumpa, Tappita, Karnwee, and Ganta, ushering in a new era of safer, cleaner, and more efficient agricultural trade in Nimba County.
The markets, funded by the World Bank at a cost of over US$950,000, are part of the Government of Liberia’s efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains, improve market access, and raise incomes for farmers and traders.
Each market can accommodate up to 100 traders and is equipped with a warehouse for storage, flush toilets for men and women, and solar-powered lighting, enabling marketers to operate in a hygienic environment and continue selling even after sunset.
Inspecting the completed market structure in Saclepea, Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah expressed appreciation to the market women and community members for their cooperation throughout the construction process.
“This market belongs to you, the people,” Dr. Nuetah said. “It is our way of empowering you to sell your produce in a clean, safe place, with proper facilities and light at night.”
The Minister noted that modern market infrastructure is critical to reducing post-harvest losses, improving food safety, and strengthening local economies.
All five markets will be officially handed over on January 20 in Saclepea at a joint ceremony bringing together government officials, development partners, and community leaders.
The RETRAP project continues to play a vital role in transforming Liberia’s rural economy by investing in infrastructure that connects farmers to markets, improves livelihoods, and supports national food security.
