Agriculture Ministry Donates Motorbike to a Local Vegetable Farmer in Bomi County
July 22, 2024:The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), donated a brand-new motorbike to a vegetable farmer in Klay District, Bomi County, to facilitate the delivery of farm produce to customers amidst the lack of a market.
The donation fulfills Agriculture Minister Dr. J Alexander Nuetah’s promise to Khalil Dukuly, owner of the “Dukuly Ken-Karrat Inc., a large-scale mechanized vegetable farm. Dr. Nuetah committed during his recent visit to the farm on the second leg of his nationwide tour.
Mr. Dukuly reported that much of the farm's produce, including large quantities of pepper, okra, and about 3,000 watermelons, was left to rot due to the lack of market and storage facility. He added that because of this situation, the business was at the mercy of market women who dictated prices to them. He also pointed out that several diasporan Liberians were willing to support the company by buying produce for their families in Liberia. However, there was still no way of making these home deliveries.
Dr. Nuetah expressed deep concerns over the lack of storage and market for vegetable farmers, adding that he had received reports of marketers profiteering from local vegetable farmers. He said the ministry was doing its best to resolve the problem. “We are actively working to address the storage issue not just for the farm but for the market. The Ministry is fully committed to supporting farmers in supplying the market,” declared the agriculture minister.
Established in 2019, the 10-acre farm, which produces exotic vegetable varieties from the Netherlands, is a beacon of hope for the local agriculture sector. The farm, with its 17 young Liberian employees, actively involved in improved agriculture practices, including nursery management, pruning, and harvesting, is a testament to the potential of the local agriculture sector. These practices ensure the quality of the produce and contribute to the development of the local agriculture sector, promising a bright future for the Liberian market.
