Ministry of Agriculture Partners with Agriculture and Infrastructure Investment Company to Support Local Paddy Rice Farmers in Lofa County

[Foya, Lofa County, October 24, 2024] – The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), in collaboration with the Agriculture and Infrastructure Investment Company (AIIC), has launched the ‘Liberians Feed Yourselves Agenda—Paddy Rice’ initiative to empower local rice farmers in Foya, Lofa County. This program aims to purchase paddy rice directly from farmers, bolstering local production and reducing reliance on imported rice.

The MOA will buy 50 kg bags of paddy rice at USD 16.00, which the AIIC will then process and package. This pilot initiative not only ensures fair and just compensation for farmers but also increases the rice supply for local milling and consumption, thereby establishing a local brand to enhance the market presence of Liberian rice.

During the first leg of his nationwide tour in Lofa County in May, Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander J. Nuetah heard firsthand from farmers about significant challenges, including stockpiled rice due to price disputes and a lack of buyers. Dr. Nuetah stressed the need for a diversified market beyond institutional buyers, allowing farmers to develop their brands to achieve better pricing, and opportunities.

This initiative aligns with President Joseph Boakai’s vision to reduce Liberia’s reliance on imported rice by 70% by the end of his tenure. By creating a sustainable market for local rice and facilitating reliable income streams for farmers, the MOA aims to support food security and foster economic growth within the community. This will benefit the farmers and the general public by ensuring a steady supply of locally produced rice, reducing the country's dependence on imports, and, more importantly, creating indigenous wealth to boost the local economy.
