RETRAP Boosts Market Access with New Modern Vegetable Kiosk at Barnersville Junction

In a move to strengthen market access for smallholder farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture, through its Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP) and with support from the World Bank, has officially handed over a modern vegetable kiosk at Barnersville Junction, situated in the Monrovia suburb. The facility is expected to transform how farmers sell their produce and enhance food availability in the capital region.

Valued at over USD 45,000, the solar-powered kiosk is equipped with modern features, including an electronic price display board and toilet facilities, offering a clean, safe, and organized space for vegetable sellers and buyers. By providing a well-structured trading environment, the kiosk is designed to promote efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses, and enable farmers to fetch better prices for their produce.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on behalf of Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, Deputy Minister for Planning and Development, Hon. David K. Akoi, said the initiative underscores the government’s dedication to modernizing agriculture, strengthening the rural economy, and empowering smallholder farmers across the country. He added that the kiosk represents the government’s broader vision to create sustainable livelihoods through agricultural innovation and improved market access.

Dr. Moses Zolue, representing RETRAP, described the kiosk as “a symbol of hope and progress for both farmers and consumers.” He emphasized that the facility could directly support up to fifteen households by boosting income and improving access to nutritious food. “By giving farmers a reliable space to sell their produce, we are helping to create a ripple effect of economic and social benefits in the communities,” he said.

Mr. Sumo Mulbah, Head of the Vegetable Sellers Association, expressed gratitude to the Ministry, RETRAP, and its partners, calling for similar facilities to be established in other counties. “This kiosk will not only help farmers earn more income, but it will also attract more buyers and improve the quality of vegetables available in our markets,” he noted.

The new kiosk is expected to have far-reaching benefits for smallholder farmers because it allows farmers to reduce post-harvest losses that occur due to inadequate storage and selling conditions. The electronic price display ensures transparency in pricing, helping farmers negotiate fair prices and protect their earnings.

As Liberia continues to modernize its agricultural sector, initiatives like the Barnersville Junction kiosk are seen as critical steps toward empowering smallholder farmers, increasing food security, and fostering inclusive economic growth throughout the country.
