Agriculture Minister Receives New WFP Country Director, Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Home-Grown School Feeding Program

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Agriculture, provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss shared priorities and explore areas of enhanced partnership, particularly in advancing Liberia’s Home-Grown School Feeding Program. Discussions focused on expanding the program’s impact by increasing the procurement of locally produced food, including rice, from Liberian farmers to supply school feeding activities across the country.

Minister Nuetah welcomed Dr. Amewoa to Liberia and emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in achieving the government’s agricultural transformation agenda. He noted that strengthening linkages between smallholder farmers and institutional markets, such as school feeding programs, remains critical to improving farmers' incomes, increasing local production, and reducing dependence on imported food commodities.

The Minister highlighted the Home-Grown School Feeding Program as a key intervention that simultaneously addresses food security, nutrition, and rural economic development by creating reliable markets for local farmers while ensuring that schoolchildren receive nutritious meals.

Dr. Amewoa reaffirmed WFP’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s agriculture and food systems, emphasizing the organization’s continued interest in working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture. 

Both parties agreed on the importance of deepening collaboration to improve coordination, and strengthen systems that enable farmers to meet quality and supply requirements for institutional markets.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to building stronger partnerships that promote local production, empower farmers, and contribute to Liberia’s broader goal of achieving food security and sustainable agricultural growth.
