The Minister of Agriculture Outlines an Ambitious Plan to Revamp Liberia’s Agriculture Sector
The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, has announced the formulation of a six-year National Agriculture Development Plan (NADP) to overhaul Liberia’s agricultural sector. This plan, which is being developed with technical support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is a testament to the government's unwavering commitment to improving the country's agricultural landscape. Dr. Nuetah stated that the NAPD will direct government investment and guide the engagement of development partners and stakeholders who support agriculture in Liberia.
The National Agriculture Development Plan (NADP), slated to be launched on May 15, 2024, will be crucial in driving President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s “ARREST Agenda,” of which agriculture is a critical focus given its potential to generate wealth for the ordinary people and boost the economy.
Dr. Nuetah stated that within the framework of the proposed NADP, Liberia would adopt a value-chain approach with production, aggregation, processing, marketing, and consumption and develop four subsectors of agriculture: food crops, tree crops, fruits, and livestock, leading to a significant economic boost. He added, “Under the NADP, we have considered focusing on critical areas that will sustain the economy's growth, make Liberia self-sufficient by producing what we eat, generating income, and ensuring nutrition security in the country.
